Jos Buttler Biography and Career

One of the most destructive white-ball players, England's Jos Buttler is renowned for his flamboyant batting and sharp wicketkeeping. Born on September 8, 1990, in Taunton, Somerset, England, Jos is the second-born of his parents' three children. His father, John Buttler, played local cricket as a wicketkeeper, and his mother, Patricia, was a physical education teacher. Jos has an elder sister, Joanne, and a younger brother, James.
Buttler studied at King's College, Taunton, where he showed his early talent in cricket and broke several school-level records. He ended the 2006 season for his school with 447 runs at an average of 49.66. The next year, he scored 358 runs at 51.14. But the most special moment of his school-cricket career came in 2007 when he scored an unbeaten 227 in a record-breaking opening stand of 340 runs. That same year, he captained his school team and also went on to score a record 851 runs at an average of 94.55.
Buttler made his first-class debut for Somerset in September 2009. He scored his maiden first-class century in his fourth County Championship match.
The first time Buttler played junior-level international cricket was in 2008 when he represented England Under-17s in two warm-up matches against New Zealand Under-19s and made an instant impact with an unbeaten 77 which was laced with 11 boundaries and two maximums.
He made his senior international debut in 2011 against India. Buttler made his T20I debut in 2011, his ODI debut in 2012, and his Test debut in 2014.
One innings that truly cemented Jos Buttler’s place in international cricket came during a match against South Africa at Edgbaston. England were struggling at 64/3, with just 16 balls left in the innings, when Buttler joined Craig Kieswetter at the crease. The duo unleashed an explosive display of power hitting, pushing the final total to 118/5. Buttler smashed 30 runs in a single over bowled by Wayne Parnell — which, at the time, was the second most expensive over in T20 internationals. Before this game, Buttler had played 10 matches but only reached double figures once in six innings.
In 2015, England began changing their approach in limited-overs cricket after a poor World Cup. Buttler played a key role in this new, attacking style. Along with teammates like Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, and Jason Roy, he helped England become a top white-ball side.
He has played several ICC tournaments for England and played a crucial role in his team winning the 2019 ODI World Cup. During the tournament, he scored 103 off 76 against Pakistan and a half-century against Bangladesh but saved his best for the final. Buttler rescued England from 86/4 with a vital 59 in a 110-run stand with Ben Stokes. He scored 7 in the Super Over and ran out Martin Guptill to seal England’s first World Cup win.
Buttler became England's white-ball captain in June 2022. He succeeded Eoin Morgan, who had led England to victory in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In 2022, after taking over from Eoin Morgan as England's white-ball captain, Buttler led the team to their second T20 World Cup title.
Apart from international cricket, Jos Buttler has also made a big name for himself in franchise cricket. He has played in leagues all over the world, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), and others.
In the IPL, he has been a star player for Rajasthan Royals. In the 2022 season, he was the top run scorer and won the Orange Cap. He scored four centuries in that season.

Beyond Cricket

Jos Buttler has an estimated net worth of around $16 million (₹134 crore) as of 2025. His income comes from his ECB contract, IPL salary, and endorsements with brands like Kookaburra, Castore, and Myprotein UK.
He married Louise Webber in October 2017. They were childhood sweethearts who first met at the age of 14. After several years of dating, the couple got engaged in 2016 before eventually exchanging vows in 2017. They have three children: daughters Georgia Rose (born April 2019) and Margot (born September 2021), and a third child born in May 2024.
Personality wise, Buttler is a family man and a media friendly person.
